E-Tandem - L3 TASK

Between formal and informal learning: L3 learning in e- tandems

Sponsor: European Commission, Executive Agency “Education, Audiovision and Culture”– Lifelong Learning Programme

Period: 2013-2016

Project supervisor for Sinology: Dr. Li Yan

The Third Language Tandem-Skype (L3 TASK) project focuses on Chinese, Spanish and German which are frequently learned as a 3rd foreign language. It aims to encourage third language learning through e-tandem communications and to introduce non-formal learning into the traditional language classroom. This multilateral project includes five European universities and two Chinese associate partner universities (University of Vienna, Universidad de Alicante, Universidad de Barcelona, Friedrich Schiller Universität Jena, Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia, Xiangtan University and Shanghai International Studies University). Video-chats from Chinese-German, Spanish-German and Spanish-Chinese e-tandems are recorded to serve as language corpus for further research on L3 acquisition.

In the course of the L3 TASK project, e-tandems between Chinese students of the University Vienna and German students of Xiangtan University have been organized since 2014. The participants are required to meet their tandem partner regularly online in order to hold conversations in German and Chinese using provided tasks or by talking about their own interests. Beginning from the 2nd semester of their Chinese studies, all sinology students with excellent German skills (C2) may take part in the project. Apart from the project there is also a new e- tandem course available to BA students who aim to further enhance their oral language skills. Bachelor students may take this course for four semesters in a row, thereby receiving in total 2 ECTS.

Participants‘ feedback:
