Institutional contradictions and change: Hong Kong and a globalizing China after the protests in 2019

How to assess the challenges and opportunities for Hong Kong and China given the conspicuous conflicts as witnessed in the unrest of 2019? This seminar contextualizes the inquiry through the historical vision of the One Country, Two Systems framework, the Belt and Road Initiative promoted by the current Chinese leadership and its Plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area, the latter unveiled shortly before the eruption of 2019 conflicts. The tested practice to leverage on institutional contradictions for change and reform will be reviewed alongside escalating challenges to stay close to the path.
