Parallel Narratives: Editing Angkor Wat at the 1931 l’Exposition Coloniale

Author(s)
Yizhuo Li
Abstract

Considering the negating and imaginary potential of a "nonument," the essay discusses the fastidious and spectacular replica of Angkor Wat at the 1931 Paris colonial exposition. This replica and the arrangement of human “exhibits” sought to edit and negate the Cambodian temple complex from the 12th century—recognized as the largest religious monument in the world—calling attention to the enabled colonial contrivances.
