In this event, Andrew MacDonald discusses his work in a two-wave survey regarding onlineprivacy conducted in China before and after the 2022 zero covid lockdowns. The results of thesurvey strongly suggest that, despite all of the invasive government monitoring used toattempt to control the spread of Covid, respondents were generally supportive of governmentinvasions of their privacy. These findings cast doubt on the long-term impact of the WhitePaper movement protests and connect to a larger body of literature on why surveys of Chinesecitizens indicate high levels of trust in their government.
