Introduction to Digital Humanities in Chinese Studies – Theory and Practice

What are digital humanities (DH) and how do they function in the context of East Asian studies? In this session, we will embark on a journey to the theory and practice of DH tailored for those who study Chinese texts. During this interactive workshop, we will examine this versatile “field” on two levels: first, we will briefly, but critically, discuss the theory and logic, as well as the advantages and limitations of DH. The goal here will be to provide a useful context, while also exploring the intellectual approach that this novel methodology and “system of skills” represents. This introduction will be intertwined with an introductory practical training, based on concrete techniques and tools, to contextualize the application of DH in different research areas. We will explore multifaceted approaches to digital Chinese studies, while paying particular attention to concrete and user-friendly platforms that can be used for research purposes (i.e. text analysis and data visualizations) that require no coding skills. By the end of the session, participants will have a good overview of the process and challenges of the production of digitally enhanced projects in the context of Chinese studies. For a full experience, it is recommended that participants bring a laptop or tablet to the session.
